The work began with a thorough inspection of the existing paint and overall condition of the fence. Many areas showed loose, flaking paint along with visible mold, mildew, and general surface grime from long-term exposure to the elements. The primary goal was not to strip the fence entirely, but to remove as many loose paint chips as practical while cleaning the wood so it would be ready for repainting.
The first phase consisted of pressure washing the fence. Water pressure was adjusted to be strong enough to dislodge failing paint, but controlled to avoid damaging the wood. Multiple passes were made along boards, rails, and posts to lift and remove peeling paint and to open up any weathered areas so they could better accept new coatings later on. All loose paint released during washing was allowed to fall to the ground, as directed.
In conjunction with the pressure washing, specialized detergents were applied to target mold, mildew, and surface contaminants. These cleaning agents were worked into the wood to break down biological growth and remove deeply embedded dirt. Extra attention was given to shaded or damp sections of the fence where mildew tends to be more severe, ensuring those areas were thoroughly cleaned.
Once the detergents had sufficient dwell time, the entire fence was rinsed extensively. This final rinse removed residual cleaning solution, lingering dirt, and any remaining loosened paint chips. The result was a clean, sound surface with unstable paint removed and solidly adhered paint left in place—an ideal condition for the next contractor or homeowner to proceed with repainting.
By the end of the job, the fence was free of loose paint, mold, mildew, and general buildup, and was left clean, structurally undisturbed, and properly prepared for a new coat of paint, with all paint chips remaining on the ground as specified.
